CSN: Phillies 'going to unload' before deadline

? ? ?
A little more than 24 hours before the trade deadline, the Phillies remain active on a number of fronts.

?They?re going to unload,? a person with knowledge of the Phillies? deadline plan said Monday afternoon.

Here?s what we know:

? According to a person with knowledge of the situation, the Phils have tried to sell Hunter Pence to a number of teams, particularly the San Francisco Giants. No team has yet met the Phils? price on Pence.

? Shane Victorino will likely be dealt. A source mentioned the Dodgers as the most likely trade partner, though the Giants and Reds have interest.

? Interest in Joe Blanton, who has had three good starts in a row, has picked up, with Baltimore expressing interest. Top Baltimore scout Bruce Kison scouted Blanton on Saturday night. A source said Blanton is getting interest from American League clubs. Toronto could be one. St. Louis might also have interest.

? Cliff Lee has been in play for weeks and remains so. There have been reports that the Phils and Texas Rangers have stepped up trade discussions. Lee can block a trade to 21 teams, but Texas reportedly is not one of them. Lee is owed $87.5 million for 2013-15, so his contract could be a stumbling block. The Phillies would require significant talent in return to move Lee. Any package would start with third base prospect Mike Olt. The Phils might also look to get a reliever like Alexi Ogando back in the deal.

Four days ago, GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said he planned to keep his pitching rotation together, but he acknowledged that plans can change. For competitive reasons, Amaro is not afraid to say one thing and do another. Witness two winters ago when he denied interest in Lee almost until the time he signed him.

? Willingness to deal Lee and Pence shows the Phillies want to free up salary.

? Amaro is also looking to deal from his bench. Ty Wigginton could go and so could Juan Pierre. The Reds like Pierre.

EU antitrust charge for Servier, Teva, others over generics

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - EU antitrust regulators charged French drugmaker Servier, Israel's Teva and four other firms on Monday with blocking the entry of generic perindopril medicine to market, its second major case against a key element of business in the pharmaceutical industry.

"At this stage, the (European) Commission takes the view that the patent settlement agreements concluded by Servier with Niche/Unichem, Matrix (today Mylan Laboratories Limited), Teva, Krka and Lupin, as well as Servier's acquisition of key competing technologies were aimed at delaying or preventing the market entry of cheap generic versions of perindopril, in violation of EU antitrust rules," the EU watchdog said in a statement.

As the online and offline worlds con?tinue to evolve and inter?act, mar?keters con?tinue to seek advice and data to ratio?nal?ize the choices they make about what kind of con?tent to pop?u?late their web?sites with. ?When con?sid?er?ing online video mar?ket?ing for your busi?ness, review the evi?dence below, that shows you can increase sales and con?ver?sion rates, drive more traf?fic to your site, reduce ser?vic?ing costs, make a?strong con?nec?tion between on and offline mar?ket?ing efforts, and per?haps most impor?tantly, build long-??term rela?tion?ships with your cus?tomers. ?That said, one caveat to a?suc?cess?ful online media strat?egy is that qual?ity of con?tent and strate?gic deploy?ment of online video mar?ket?ing material.

Online Video Mar?ket?ing: Qual?ity Matters

Increase Your Con?ver?sion Rate & Rev?enue Per?Sale

  • Retail sites with video increase the aver?age sale rev?enue by 13% (Source:?L2 Spe?cialty Retail Report).

Drive More Traf?fic To Your Site With Online Video Marketing

  • When opti?mized cor?rectly, video con?tent increases the like?li?hood of a?first page Google search result by 53 times (Source:?For?rester).
  • Video con?tent search results appear in 70% of the top 100 list?ings, which are the most com?monly dis?played results for uni?ver?sal or blended queries (Source:?Mar?ket?ing?week).

Reduce Cus?tomer Ser?vice?Costs

  • Major online brands includ?ing Dell and Vir?gin Mobile report a?reduc?tion in ser?vice call vol?ume by 5???10% as a?result of incor?po?rat?ing instruc?tional, and prod?uct infor?ma?tion videos on their web?sites (Source:?The Aus?tralian).
  • Online retail?ers have also found that strate?gi?cally adding online video to sup?port prod?ucts has reduced prod?uct returns at a?rate between 10???25% (Source:?Inter?net Retailer).

Love and Equality: Gay Wedding Ideas and Resources

This article has been viewed 51 times.

Individuals who wish to pledge their endless love, despite having distinctions, hold the right to marry. However, planning a wedding ceremony needs a great deal of time and focus. Here are some gay wedding ideas and resources you should consider:

Make a spending budget

Figure out the amount you can spend for the wedding. Speak with your lover the potential expenses for the wedding ceremony like wedding venue, flowers, cuisine, entertainment, etc. Focus on the things you require for the ceremony and reception.

Pick a schedule

Discuss possible wedding schedules together with your spouse and other family members. Think about your work cycles so that you can choose a date for your wedding that is least demanding for your job. Think about the type and date of your honeymoon. Choosing a weekend might work best because most people may be free of their obligations at work or school. Arrange another date in case your first option does not work out.

Select a wedding ring

Select a reputable jeweler. Look online for jewelry stores around your neighborhood. You can also talk to couples for referrals. Consider the sum you can spend for gay man wedding rings. Check lists to get an idea of the retail price range. Do not forget to speak about your spending budget to the jewelry retailers so that they can show rings that fall within your budget. Shop with your spouse to find out what style you both want. Match your marriage bands with the engagement rings ? have these personalized so they can be more unique. If youre shopping for diamond rings, familiarize yourself with the four Cs: cut, clarity, color, and carat. Ensure the jeweler has the proper certificates for the gemstones.

Hire wedding coordinators

Wedding planners can help you with the overall planning process, so be sure to choose a dependable one. Consult newlyweds, family, and associates for recommendations. Search online for available coordinators. Check their background and expertise ? look at critiques and wedding photos of previous clients. Identify the level of support you need from the planners. For example, you can hire one who can organize together with suppliers, caterers, and venue managers. You can hire one who can help you with the wedding portfolio or keep track of specifics and timetables. Be sure the wedding coordinators fee matches your budget.

Choose a theme

Talk to your lover regarding possible wedding ceremony concepts. Be creative when coming up with the concept. Go for garden weddings if you prefer a solemn and private ceremony. Consider the time of your wedding, too. Select beach weddings if you are planning to get married during the summer. Choose wedding colors based on your preferred flower ? choose a main color for the central motif.

Find a location

Pick a wedding venue that will suit your budget. Garden wedding ceremonies can be a fantastic option if you are on a tight budget, as you can hold the ceremony in your garden. Think of your guest list ? determine the actual number of people who will be going to the wedding. Look at the availability of the wedding venue. Book the venue four months prior to the wedding date to avoid any problems. Be sure you have a backup wedding venue if you plan to hold a backyard marriage ceremony.

Additional tips

Get a music group or a DJ for amusement throughout the wedding reception. Find wedding catering services so you dont have to cook the food on your own. Search the internet for more gay wedding ideas and resources.

Dacic Presents Goals of Serbia's New Govt :: Balkan Insight

The sound of the national anthem and the presence of a ceremonial guard marked the ceremony when Serbia's new cabinet members took their oath of office.

They failed to be sworn in on Thursday, as was scheduled, following a ten-hour long discussion in parliament over the new government's aims.

With 17 ministries and 19 officials to run them, the government will be the smallest that the country has seen since the multi-party system returned to Serbia in 1990.

The new government, which consists of the Serbian Progressive Party, the Socialists and the United Regions of Serbia, will be headed by Ivica Dacic, leader of the Socialists and once the right-hand man of Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic.

The debate in parliament started after Dacic presented the key points of his team's policy.

Dacic said that the main goal was to get the country moving, raise employment, revive the economy and accelerate EU integration.

In his speech to parliament, he said he did not wish to dwell on differences, but to rally the most intelligent people and ideas to serve Serbia's best interests. "This government will be for the future, not focused on the past," Dacic noted.

Dacic underscored the gravity of the situation that Serbia was in, saying he would labour to achieve a broad consensus on reforms.

Economic recovery is the priority and all other goals hinge on it - Serbia's European future, Kosovo, regional cooperation, the battle against crime and corruption, education and healthcare, he emphasized.

The government's economic policy will not demand that people tighten their belts, he asserted.

"The role of the government during this period must be to ensure the least painful way to lead the people out of the economic crisis," he said.

Turning to economic policy, Dacic stated the new government would resume talks with the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and other financial institutions.

But it would not freeze salaries and pensions, and there would be no privatization of the state-owned like power company EPS, the post office, PTT, the railway company Zeleznice Srbije and Belgrade airport.

The dilemma between development and austerity is a false one, Dacic said, adding that Serbia needed both.

By the end of September, when the situation with the budget is clear, the government will adopt urgent steps to cut the budget deficit, he said.

The goal of the new government is to speed up EU integration with a view to getting a start date for the accession talks, he pointed out. Dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina would also continue.

"Serbia will not recognize Kosovo's [2008] independence [but] the Serbian government wants normal life for all the people in Kosovo," he said.

"Everything agreed at the [EU-led] technical talks with Pristina needs to be implemented and the dialogue continued on the political level, involving top government officials," Dacic stated.

Serbia will cooperate with all countries of the world, advocating security, stability and good relations in the Western Balkans and holding out its hand in reconciliation, Dacic added.

The government will lead an efficient, systemic and uncompromising battle against crime and corruption, and will investigate all suspicious privatizations, he noted.

The government will also respect the autonomy of the Province of Vojvodina and will continue to improve human and minority rights; it will offer ethnic Albanians in southern Serbia an opportunity to integrate into the political and social system, he continued.

"In this age we live in, no one is a wizard, able to solve all the problems that Serbia faces. But the Serbian people expect more justice, a government that helps them and a resolute, responsible and efficient government, which will share the fate of the entire nation," he said.

"They expect politicians who can be trusted," Dacic concluded.

Are we same species? World agog at British Games opener

LONDON (Reuters) - "Strange", "baffling" and "surreal" was how director Danny Boyle described his Olympic opening ceremony. The rest of the world largely agreed.

In the press stands of the arena where the ceremony took place on Friday night, Chinese journalists looked puzzled and asked their English peers for guidance as they struggled to make sense of the artistic whirlwind for their readers back home.

Reaction to the $42 million showcase event at the main Olympic stadium and across Britain, which is hosting the 2012 Games, was overwhelmingly positive.

But the plain-talking Boyle, who won an Oscar for "Slumdog Millionaire", will not be remotely surprised to hear that "Isles of Wonder", a kaleidoscopic canter through Britain's past, left many viewers scratching their heads.

Boyle was braced for bewilderment even ahead of the four-hour ceremony inspired by Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and packed with references to British history, literature and music.

The opening minutes of the ceremony "you might find a bit strange and baffling", he told reporters from dozens of countries before the show. The second half, he warned, would be "actually slightly surreal; some of you will be baffled, I can guarantee it".

So wide was the cultural divide for some that Spain's centre-right daily El Mundo pondered: "Are we of the same species as the Brits?"

But underlining how sharply divided opinions have been to the London 2012 opening, other Spanish newspapers were full of praise.

QUEEN, BOND AND BEAN

Quintessentially British, the ceremony opened with a re-creation of bucolic bliss, referencing William Blake's "green and pleasant lands", before turning dark and recreating the "dark Satanic mills" of industrialisation.

William Shakespeare and John Milton made way for Ian Fleming, Lewis Carroll and J.K. Rowling, while Elgar, Handel and Parry were drowned out by the Clash and the Sex Pistols.

Comedy character Mr. Bean crashed the London Symphony Orchestra's party, while James Bond, played by Daniel Craig, joined Queen Elizabeth in a short, tongue-in-cheek video.

"The opening of the London Olympic Games reminded us that heart and passion are just as important as proficiency and technique!" Nigel Lythgoe, producer of "American Idol" and a Briton working full-time in Hollywood, said.

"As long as the games exist, Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth's entrance with James Bond will always be remembered. Steeped in history and tradition the opening ceremony made me extremely proud to be British."

Many of the characters in the show resonate well beyond home shores, but the combination was too parochial for some.

"Of course it was a very British ceremony and it had to be like that, but for me it lacked a certain universality," Hansel Cereza, a Spanish actor and artistic director responsible for choreography at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, said.

Others agreed with Boyle - the point of the show was to portray what it is to be British.

"There has to be an element of the home team showing off what they're all about," said Salman Dadobhoy, a businessman from Islamabad.

From Germany, where sporting rivalry with Britain is keenly felt after crunch clashes at major soccer tournaments in recent decades, there was plenty of friendly feedback.

The Bild tabloid called it "an opening ceremony with lots of goose-bump moments, and a big dose of British humour. Thank you! That was great, Britain."

BEIJING COMPARISONS

Comparisons with the last Summer Games were inevitable, given that Boyle worked with a budget of well under half the estimated cost of the Beijing opener and created a show that was chaotic and more personalised.

"If Zhang Yimou's dazzling Beijing opening in 2008 was about automaton-like synchronicity and majestic spectacle, Boyle's epic opera of social and cultural history was a vibrant work of unfettered imagination that celebrated a nation, but even more so, its people," wrote David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter.

Dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, an outspoken critic of the authorities, called the ceremony "brilliant", singling out a section dedicated to Britain's National Health Service (NHS) welfare system and children's literature.

"A nation that has no music and no fairytales is a tragedy," he wrote in the Guardian newspaper.

Boyle argued that the memorable scale and precision of Beijing had in fact been helpful.

"There has to be a modesty about it. You can't get grandiose with this job because you're following Beijing," he said.

"The shows get bigger and bigger and bigger and you can't get bigger than Beijing, so that in a way kind of liberated us."

"SHOULDERS OF GIANTS"

For a director from working class roots who broke through with "Trainspotting", a film about down-and-out drug addicts in Scotland, Boyle has travelled a long way to take charge of one of the world's most prestigious events.

His mischievous spirit and ideals shone through, with the Sex Pistols blaring while Her Majesty looked on and the ode to the NHS seemingly a warning to cost-cutting politicians not to meddle with the cherished service.

Yet the establishment was also there - soccer player David Beckham and former Beatle Paul McCartney played major roles, and even Queen Elizabeth, the fiercely private 86-year-old monarch, joined the party with her film debut, albeit a brief one.

Nearly 27 million Britons watched the opening ceremony, eclipsing last year's royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton, and 19 million were still tuned in well after midnight when the cauldron was lit.

"It's all very British but as a spectacle it stands," said commentator Inge Van Meensel for Dutch language broadcaster VRT.

"Danny Boyle said he wanted to stand on the shoulders of giants. After tonight he will be a giant too."

Preston Tucker's 1948 car an incredible pacesetter - The News Herald

A story about Preston Tucker?s struggles ran in the Pittsburgh Press on June 12, 1949. It was reprinted as part of a story on Tucker and his Tucker 48 in the March edition of Hemmings Classic Car magazine.

This is a model of a Tucker car that?s nearly 11 inches long, just over 4 inches wide and about 3 1/2 inches tall. Photos by Dave Chapman

Even in cruise-crazed collectors? panoramas, one automobile continues to draw admirers for its ingenuity: Preston Tucker?s revolutionary 1948 Tucker Torpedo.

Still fascinating 60-plus years after its introduction, the advanced vehicle reflected the genius of the man himself, a Prohibition-era motorcycle cop in his early days in Lincoln Park.

Even automotive wizards of that era stood in awe of Tucker?s innovations: seat belts, a pop-out windshield, a padded dashboard, reinforced frames, a cyclops headlight and a powerful engine and drivetrain. Almost all of them have since been incorporated into vehicles.

Tucker himself was an extraordinary man. A Lincoln Park High School graduate, he had no college education, no formal training except classes at Detroit?s Cass Technical High School, and tinkering on cars while working at Cadillac, Chrysler, Studebaker and Ford.

Not all of his patents were automotive related. He built Indianapolis 500 racers at one time, and also designed and built a gun turret used on World War II aircraft.

Born in Capac in Michigan?s Thumb region, Tucker moved with his family to a Warwick Street home in Lincoln Park, long ago demolished and now the site of a parking lot.

He always considered Lincoln Park his home, and was active in civic events. He worked as a motorcycle policeman during the Prohibition era and even entered politics as an unsuccessful mayoral candidate in 1935. Tucker died at age 53 in Brazil, where he was forming an auto manufacturing company. His body was returned home for burial at Michigan Memorial Park in Huron Township.

Besides its molded lines and sleek appearance, the ?48 Tucker Torpedo sported a third headlight that rotated in any steering direction to illuminate the path of a turn. This ?cyclops eye? was featured in ?Tucker: The Man and His Dream,? a movie by a former Detroiter, Francis Ford Coppola.

The directional headlight was copied from Tucker?s stint as a Lincoln Park motorcycle cop with Floyd Crichton, later to become police chief. Prohibition was an unpopular law of the Roaring ?20s, and plenty of Canadian whiskey was being smuggled from Detroit River hideouts north up Southfield Road through Ecorse and Lincoln Park.

The duty of Crichton and Tucker, swift on their Indian Zundapp motorcycles (forerunner of Harley-Davidsons), was to pursue and chase the bootleggers out of town. That?s when a headlight turning with the motorcycle?s handlebars became an idea for a feature of the ?48 Tucker Torpedo. Continued...

Tucker was not timid in power for his automobile. He used a helicopter engine rated over 100 mph at 2,000 rpms, and a zero-to-60 mph time of 10 seconds. At least one Tucker had 200,000 odometer miles before needing major repair.

Unlike other cars of its era, the Tucker featured several safety measures. A unibody was welded to an automotive frame to eliminate body rattles and provide a safety cage. Bumpers were mounted on springs to absorb shock. The steering wheel was a breakaway design so it wouldn?t ?spear? the driver in a crash.

The 1948 Tucker Torpedo is not likely to be seen in the cruises that attract hordes of viewers. Of the 51 made, 47 survive, with only three in Tucker?s home state.

Judges this year included Masterchef winner and restaurateur Mat Follas, restaurant critic and Masterchef judge, Charles Campion, food writers Lucas Hollweg and Xanthe Clay and over 300 food buyers from leading food halls, delicatessens and farm shops including Harrods, Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason.
According to Guild of Fine Food chairman, Bob Farrand, each of these food and drink products was rigorously scrutinised. He said: ?To achieve a 3-star grading involves at least 25 experts unanimously agreeing that the product tastes divine.

?But to be included in the Top 50 Foods in Britain meant each one had to satisfy the discerning palates of a further 25 dedicated foodies. These products all deliver the most extraordinary taste.?

Nick Otley, managing director of the Otley Brewing Company, said: ?To reach the top 50 Great Taste List is brilliant news and a real testament to the quality of our beers.

?O-Garden has always been a firm favourite in our portfolio since it was first brewed in 2009. Since then it?s received critical acclaim from top beer judges such as Melissa Cole who described it as exciting, refreshing and complex.

?We have only been brewing since 2005 and the company has grown so much since then. It?s an exciting time for the craft beer industry right now and many people are seeking out new flavours and fusions. We?re always thinking of new ways with beer by cooking with it and matching beers to different foods.
?To be part of Great Taste is a fantastic industry stamp of recognition and we?re pleased to have been ranked alongside some other top Welsh and UK food and drink products.?

Great Taste is the biggest independent benchmarking scheme for local, regional and speciality foods in Britain. Over 350 professional foodies are brought together each year to take part in 45 days of judging, deciding which foods deserve one-star, two-star or the ultimate three-star awards.
The scheme has become known for launching little-known artisan producers into the big time of the fine food world, while occasionally discovering the odd mainstream surprise. Speciality foods in this year?s Top 50 also include a North African Berber cake made in Gloucestershire, a pear juice from a college in Warwickshire, a sourdough miches from Cumbria, a corned pork from Northern Ireland and a Lithuanian Scalded Rye Bread from Essex.

The annual programme culminates with the ?Golden Fork? Awards in London in September and the naming of the Great Taste Supreme Champion, a title won last year by a corned beef from traditional Northern Ireland butcher, McCartney?s of Moira which has been nominated again in 2012.

New York Times reports higher revenue, stock jumps

(AP) ? The New York Times Co. stock rose sharply on Thursday after the media company reported that second-quarter revenue increased slightly.

Most of the revenue gain at the company, which publishes The New York Times and Boston Globe, stemmed from higher newspaper circulation, especially in its digital editions.

Revenue rose less than 1 percent to $515.2 million from $512 million. Analysts were expecting revenue of about $511 million. The last time the Times saw revenue grow was in the second quarter of 2010, when it increased by 1 percent to $589.6 million from $582.7 million.

The company's stock rose 75 cents, or 11 percent, to close at $7.80 on Thursday. The stock has traded between $5.50 and $8.92 in the past year.

Overall, the company said it lost $88.1 million, or 60 cents per share, in the April-June period, largely due to a one-time charge it made for the declining value of its About.com business. In the same period a year ago, the Times took a one-time charge to reflect the declining value of its regional newspaper division. It lost $119.7 million, or 81 cents.

The one-time charge amounted to $126.1 million, or 85 cents. Excluding the one-time charge and other items, the Times would have earned $21.5 million in the latest quarter.

Adjusted earnings were 14 cents per share in the latest quarter, up from 11 cents per share in the second quarter of 2011. Analysts, on average, were expecting adjusted earnings of 13 cents per share on revenue of $510.7 million, according to FactSet.

The company said strength in both print and digital newspaper circulation helped to offset advertising revenue declines.

Total company circulation revenue, which includes The New York Times, The Boston Globe and the International Herald Tribune, rose 8 percent. Circulation revenue at the company's flagship newspaper grew 11 percent.

The Times Co. continued to see growth in digital subscriptions, thanks to a so-called electronic paywall system it erected in March of 2011. Under the system, the Times charges readers for monthly access to an unlimited number of articles. The strategy, closely watched by executives in the industry, has helped to boost the Times' circulation and is being adopted at other newspapers. In April, the Times cut the number of articles readers can access for free from 20 to 10 per month.

At the end of June, the Times Co. had roughly 532,000 digital subscribers, a gain of 13 percent from the 472,000 it had March 18, 2012, which was the one-year anniversary of the company's digital subscription launch.

The Times Co. said that its advertising revenue decreased 7 percent to $244.3 million from $262.1 million and circulation revenue rose 8 percent to $233.3 million from $215.3 million. Revenue from other businesses such as commercial printing, news syndication and digital archives, increased 9 percent to $37.7 million from $34.5 million.

Revenue at the About Group declined 9 percent to $25.4 million in the second quarter. About.com offers users guides and other content on topics such as parenting, health care and cooking. Most of its users arrive at About's content through search engines.

The Times said About's ad revenue declined and said competition and the uncertain economy offset progress the company had made rebuilding About.com's sales team.

Chairman and CEO Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said that despite the accounting charge, the "About Group continues to execute on its turnaround strategy and we expect it to be on track to post continued meaningful improvement in the second half of the year."

Toyota passes GM globally, and VW is closing fast

By Paul Lienert and Christiaan Hetzner, Reuters

Toyota Motor Corp. regained the lead in global car sales over General Motors Co. in the first half of the year, with Volkswagen AG poised to move past GM and push the U.S. automaker into third place for the full year.

The bigger question is how soon the German auto giant also will pass Toyota and secure the global sales crown ? an internal goal that VW management has targeted for 2018 as part of the company's so-called Strategie 18.

VW, in a cautious statement released Thursday, said: "The Volkswagen Group is right on track for 2018, but has not crossed the finish line yet. For us, quality takes precedence over quantity. We don't want to be the biggest, but rather the best and most sustainable automaker in the world. For us, environmentally friendly products and satisfied customers and employees are at least as important as sales rankings and profitability."

It still has to maneuver past a resurgent Toyota, which has rebounded smartly from the effects of last year's earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Toyota in February said it expects to sell a record 9.58 million vehicles globally in 2012, shattering the old mark of 9.37 million in 2007.

Toyota had held the global sales crown from 2008 through 2010, before the natural disasters in Japan dropped it last year to third place, behind GM and VW.

"We have recovered greatly from the earthquake and tsunami," said Javier Moreno, a spokesman for New York-based Toyota North America. "Our dealers now have plenty of inventory and showroom traffic is up on a global basis."

Toyota said it sold 4.97 million vehicles worldwide in the first six months, a substantial increase from the 3.72 million it sold last year, when all Japanese automakers were reeling from the earthquake's aftermath.

GM said it sold 4.67 million vehicles in the first half, up 3.0 percent from 4.54 million the previous year. GM's global performance was driven by record first-half sales in China, which now accounts for more than 30 percent of the automaker's worldwide total. The U.S. market, where GM's sales are growing at a much slower pace, accounts for only 28 percent of the company's total sales.

GM spokesman James Cain on Wednesday said: "We continue to grow our sales and share in China . . . We are in the early days of the most aggressive roll out of new products in our history, which will help us press our advantage in the U.S. and China and grow profitably around the world."

VW, in a mid-year company report released Thursday, said its first-half sales totaled 4.64 million, up 12.4 percent from 4.13 million last year. But the German auto giant, which recently added sports-car maker Porsche to a diversified brand portfolio that also includes heavy-truck makers MAN and Scania, sounded a note of restraint.

"Deliveries by the Volkswagen Group developed very well in the first half of the year," sales boss Christian Klingler told reporters earlier this month. "But that is by no means cause for euphoria. The economic situation, particularly in Western Europe, remains tense and difficult."

Klingler added: "We remain on track and are entering the second half (of the) year, which will be altogether more challenging, with confidence."

A renewed focus on the U.S. market is part of VW's long-range plan to boost global sales to more than 10 million units by 2018, with the United States contributing at least 10 percent of that volume.

Tom Libby, senior automotive analyst with Southfield, Michigan-based R.L. Polk, said VW's management "has been very aggressive, with the U.S. playing a significant role in their global growth strategy. They have become more competitive on pricing here, and we expect their sales and share will continue to rise."

Finding Extra Money to Save for Retirement | Ellwood City News

Chances are you would like to be able to save more money each month toward your retirement or other financial goals. Who couldn?t use a little more? Given the reality of lower interest rates and investment returns that many have experienced in recent years, simply saving more money is the key to building a sufficient nest egg for retirement. But unfortunately it?s not so simple to come up with the extra cash to sock away.

It may be challenging, but not impossible. Start by looking at it this way; if you decide to set aside another $100 per month for your retirement, it amounts to $3.33 per day. If you?d like to be more aggressive and save an extra $500 per month ? you would need to set aside $17 per day or about $120 each week. In some cases, saving these manageable amounts daily can add up ? and lead to a more secure financial future. Here are a few savings opportunities to consider:

Refinancing your mortgage

If the equity position in your home is favorable and you are paying interest on your mortgage at a rate that is noticeably higher than today?s low rates, refinancing could save you a significant amount on your mortgage. The way to benefit the most from refinancing is not to increase your spending on other things, but to invest each dollar saved in a retirement plan or to help you fund other financial goals.

Changing your tax withholding

According to the IRS, as of the end of April 2012, the average tax refund paid on a 2011 tax return was $2,700. If you are consistently receiving a sizable refund and don?t anticipate major changes in your income or deductions claimed on a tax return, you can adjust the amount withheld from your paycheck. Talk to your employer about completing a new W-4 form, and put your bigger paycheck to good use.

Reducing gas costs

With gas prices hovering around $3 to $4 or more per gallon, it?s become more expensive to drive. Cut back on unnecessary driving and consider finding alternative ways to get to work such as public transit. Walk and bike more to nearby places. More careful use of vehicles could generate $50 to $100 extra dollars each month.

Managing your food budget

Food can be one of the biggest expenses for a family. Better meal planning can help you stretch your grocery dollars by reducing the amount of food you throw out and the number of times you pay for meals at restaurants. In addition, think about other ways to cut back, such as eating fewer lunches out during the week or cutting back on expensive coffee drinks that can easily add up.

Identifying home expenses you can live without

Many of us pay exorbitant bills for services like cable or satellite TV without actually using the service enough to justify the expense. Consider whether a movie rental service might be a cheaper alternative. Explore whether there are cheaper ways to access phone service than what you pay now. A little frugality now could make a difference in the future.

Making a big difference over time

Nobody will claim that saving an extra $5 here or there will create instant financial security. But a patient, consistent strategy of saving and investing more for your retirement or other financial goals can truly add up.

If you can save an extra $100 per month and invest it in a tax-deferred IRA or workplace retirement plan earning an average annual return of seven percent per year, that money would accumulate to a before-tax value of:

????? $17,409 in ten years

????? $52,394 in 20 years

????? $122,699 in 30 years.

If you increase your contribution to $300, it would, based on the same return and tax assumptions, grow to a value of approximately $368,000 in 30 years. Saving an extra $500 per month with the same assumptions would accumulate $613,495 in retirement assets in 30 years.

Extra effort now could significantly improve your financial standing in retirement. Consider meeting with a financial advisor to help you get started and explore more saving and investment options.

Adopting A Pet Bird? 7 Things To Think About Before You Do ...

?

If you are considering adopting a pet bird, it?s a big decision and one that will change the bird?s life and yours. Here are 7 important aspects of bird ownership to consider before you finalize your decision.

Life Span? Some parrots have a life expectancy of 70! This is a huge factor when adopting. Your age and general health should be factored into this decision. If you are older, adopting a pet that is expected to have a shorter life expectancy would help insure that you would always be there to take care of it. In matters of the heart, we don?t always get to choose who or what we love do we?

Clean Up?All pets are going to create the need for extra cleaning. However, there are some species of birds (powder down) that create a white dust that is a natural part of their growth and development.

Needless to save, this can become overwhelming in terms of trying to literally keep the dust and dander down. These birds include the African Grey, Cockatoo, and Cockatiel. As gorgeous as these birds are, if you want low maintenance, look elsewhere.

Size?Size does matter because it is direct proportion to how much space your pet will need to stay physically and emotionally healthy. The bigger the bird, the larger the cage needs to be.

The ideal cage should allow enough space for it to fly inside both vertically and laterally without damaging its wings. If living space is limited choosing small rather than large is a better choice. If space is not an issue a large bird or two may work for you.

Personality? This is such an important factor to consider before you bring your pet home. Observing and interacting with it at different times during the day will give you a pretty accurate idea of what to expect.

Even though personality traits are generalized by species, each one is different. Taking time to get to know individual traits will make for a happier match and hopefully save the heartbreak of finding out that you are unable to live with issues that were not apparent before you brought it home.

Life Style? Here?s where doing a little research about the type of bird you?re considering will pay big dividends. If you have plenty to spend then choosing a bird that needs a lot of attention from its human is a great match.

If, however, you travel a lot or work long hours and lack the time and energy necessary to satisfy a more social bird, maybe fish are a better choice, or a pair of birds that can entertain themselves. This is a crucial piece of information to know before you finalize your decision.

Noise Level?Find out what kinds of sounds your avian friend makes, and consider your living conditions. If you live in an apartment, condo, townhouse where walls adjoin, loud and/or continuous shrieks can cause everybody to become unhappy.

Most importantly, remember that regardless of what the general description is of the variety you are looking at, each pet is an individual and you should do everything you can to get to know what that means for the bird you are considering.

Social Graces? As with people, some pets are more able to get along with people, small children, and other pets. Consider who is going to live with you and this pet and do a little homework about what to expect. If the research shows that a particular type of bird is not good with family members that you know it is going to be exposed to, better to know up front than after you have made your decision.

Can Qigong Really Heal the Body? Simple Facts from an Expert ...

Qigong, a type of Chinese healing that dates back thousands of years, is a practice in which some professional acupuncturists are trained. As one of main branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Qigong is a form of exercise considered very beneficial to your health. Other TCM branches include herbal medicine, tui na massage, and the more commonly known acupuncture. To promote the healing of the physical body, these techniques work to promote the growth of the patient?s life energy. Sometimes referred to as Chi gung (chee-gung), this practice involves rhythmic breathing along with movement. The goal of this healing technique is to promote graceful and repetitive movements in the patient so as to facilitate the flow of the person?s life force or Qi.

This practice has been shown to improve the health of the mind, body, and spirit through helping the patient to reach a state of meditation. This practice has been greatly influenced by a number of different disciplines including philosophy, medicine, and martial arts. The electromagnetic energy that surrounds each of our bodies can become disrupted with all of the hustle and bustle of modern life. Blockages inhibit the flow of Qi, or energy can happen when we spend too many hours sitting at work, or have long periods of inactivity.

Other situations can also affect the Qi such as emotional suppression, the lack of a well rounded diet, and injury. Eliminating the blockages and allowing the Qi to flow will improve organ regulation, immune function, and promote nervous system health.

All over the world, more and more people are starting to appreciate the benefits of Traditional Chinese medicine. These healthy techniques are being used by doctors in hospitals and clinics as a means of treating numerous afflictions and conditions. People undergoing radiation treatments for cancer or chemotherapy have found relief from the many side effects of treatment. Individuals have also experienced relief from symptoms caused by Parkinson?s Disease, MS, cerebral palsy, and strokes. The practice is especially beneficial for anyone suffering from chronic pain, or digestive issues, respiratory conditions, or the effects of cardiovascular disease and conditions related to the nervous system.

A proper acupuncturist will be able to complete a thorough diagnostic assessment in order to determine whether a disruption in the patient?s gi has occurred. A treatment regimen can then be developed using various different methods unique to TCM. With the proper treatment, the flow of gi will be restored and the mind and body will return to their proper functioning. There are a number of licensed acupuncturists who are also certified in Chinese healing treatments and practices, including herbology, cupping, moxibustion and others. Traditional chinese practices stress the importance of keeping the yin and yang in balance and correcting disharmony in the body. For thousands of years, Chinese medicine has succeeded in healing both the mind and body of patients.

Dr. Steven Schram has been providing acupuncture for nearly 30 years. To learn more about the Chinese Healing Art of qigong nyc you can visit his website.
