Hurricane Sandy may leave 10 million in dark

Hurricane Sandy, the storm barreling toward the east coast of the United States, could leave at least 10 million people without power, according to a new model.

"The most heavily impacted areas are going to be up through the mid-Atlantic, Delaware, into southeastern Maryland and southeastern Pennsylvania and into New Jersey," said Seth Guikema, a researcher at Johns Hopkins University who developed the model.

As of 11 a.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 28, the center of Hurricane Sandy was located 250 miles (400 kilometers) southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and 575 miles (930 km) south of New York City. The storm is moving toward the northeast near 14 miles per hour (23 kilometers per hour). A turn to the north and then the northwest is expected Sunday night and early Monday. The current forecast track puts the center of Sandy near the coast Monday night, according to the National Hurricane Center.

To predict the impact of the storm the team looks at the most recently available forecasts of wind gusts and duration for 19,000 census tracts along the Eastern Seaboard, Guikema told LiveScience. (A census tract includes between 4,000 and 6,000 people).

The most recent run of the prediction, current as of 8 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, suggested that at least 3 million people will be without power in New Jersey, along with 2 million in Maryland, 2 million in southeastern Pennsylvania, and 370,000 in Delaware, Guikema told LiveScience. Many more people could be out of power in New York City, but the team's model can't predict the city's power outages as well.

Con-Edison, which serves 3.2 million households in New York City and Westchester County, is preparing for the possibility of extensive damage to its networks.

"Because of the high winds that may impact on the overhead and then on the underground system there's a possibility that the storm surge floods could harm our equipment," said Con-Edison spokesperson Sara Banda.

Most power companies are mobilizing their repair crews so they are ready to restore power as quickly as possible, Guikema said. "They hunker down and they wait. There are rules on how low their wind speeds are before they are allowed to go out in their buckets."

[ How to Prepare for Hurricane Sandy ]

But once the winds die down, they can be deployed quickly, he said.

The best thing residents can do is call their power company if the electricity goes out, because companies don't have a way of tracking power in each home.

"Most utilities don't know for sure until they get the call in," he said.

To prepare for a long time without electricity, people should stock up on drinking water and non-perishable food, he said. People living in areas forecasted to get high winds should bring loose furniture and other items on decks indoors, he added.

"This storm is later in the season so it's also cold," he said. "So people have to have some way of staying warm."

Djokovic rallies to beat Murray in Shanghai final

SHANGHAI (AP) ? Novak Djokovic saved five match points in the second set before outlasting two-time defending champion Andy Murray 5-7, 7-6 (11), 6-3 on Sunday in the Shanghai Masters final.

In another entertaining matchup between the two U.S. Open finalists, Djokovic seemed headed for defeat when Murray was serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set.

But the second-ranked Serb saved one match point in that game before breaking back for 5-5. He then saved four more in a tense tiebreaker and carried his momentum into the deciding set, breaking the Briton twice to earn his fifth title of the year.

"I won the match. But, you know, as spectators could see, we were very close," Djokovic said. "It was a very even match throughout the whole three sets. He was so close to the victory that I cannot say I was the better player."

It was Murray's first loss in Shanghai in 13 matches.

Murray, who beat Djokovic in five sets at Flushing Meadows for his first Grand Slam title, saved two match points in the final game, but sent a backhand long on the third.

"It was a disappointing one to lose," Murray said. "I've lost tougher matches than that before in the biggest events. So I'm sure I'll recover from it pretty well.

"It's not like I threw the match away. I didn't make, I don't think, any real glaring errors or anything."

In a matchup of two of the game's best returners, both players struggled to hold serve early, trading breaks three times, and were tied 4-4 in the first set.

When Djokovic was broken for the fourth time in the 11th game, he lost his cool and shattered his racket by smashing it into the ground four times before slinging it disgustedly toward his sideline chair.

"We are professional tennis players and we're big rivals, but in the end we're humans. We shouldn't be ashamed of our emotions," Djokovic said. "I don't see anything bad in showing your emotions ? positive, negative emotions. We can't just be flat-faced throughout the whole match."

The momentum seemed to shift with one audacious shot from the Serb, just as Murray appeared to be closing in on his third straight title at the tournament.

Trailing 5-4 and 30-0 in the second set, Djokovic chased down a lob from Murray and hit a perfect between-the-legs shot, then followed it up with a drop shot to win the point. He went on to save Murray's first match point with a forehand and broke back when the Briton missed a forehand of his own two points later.

In the 20-minute tiebreaker, Djokovic finally prevailed when he converted his fourth set point with a forehand winner.

Murray couldn't recover, and Djokovic broke for a 4-3 lead before winning the next two games to wrap up the win.

Djokovic also beat Murray in five sets in the Australian Open semifinals this year and improved his record against the Briton to 9-7.

"We had an incredible year so far with our matches, big matches in important events," Djokovic said. "He definitely is a different player this year. You could see by the results he's achieved. He's more aggressive on the court and he's definitely a danger to anybody on any surface."

Body Sculpting through Stress Reduction | DIAKADI BLOG

JP sears template copy

By JP Sears, Holistic Health Coach

Achieving or maintaining the sculpted body of our dreams involves hard work in the gym and dedication to clean nutrition, just to redundantly state the obvious. While not many people would dispute the validity of these essentials, the question begs to be asked, ?What happens when they?re not enough?? Perhaps you?ve committed the input of effort and time yet the output of the sculptured physique you?ve envisioned hasn?t come knocking at your door. What then? You may postulate that there is a glitch in the matrix and an invisible force is playing torturous tricks on you. Or maybe you determine that you simply need to invest more blood, sweat, and tears, after all this trinity makes up the holy water of great bodies, does it not? But could there be more to it than that?

What if we looked beyond these norms to a routinely overlooked element that at first glance has seeming nothingness to do with our strength or leanness? Perhaps our gaze lands on the element of our stress levels.? Upon second glance, our vision expands and we can begin to see that our stress levels can have more than everything to do with why our body sculpturing efforts are handcuffed. If elevated stress levels are the Alcatraz of body shaping obstacles, then we can rest easy knowing the flip side of the coin is that stress reduction strategies become the genie in the bottle very capable of granting us the fitness improvements we so desire. The purpose of these words is to invite you into the second glance at your stress levels and offer strategies for reducing them in the name of paving a walkable path to embodying your physique goals.

How Does Stress Reduction Promote Body Sculpting?

To overly simplify the simple concept, stress reduction creates a hormonal environment that burns body fat and builds muscle in a way quite similar to how exercise does by optimizing your hormonal system. The difference is that when we?re stressed, stress reduction targets the block that is impairing our hormonal system from being in the optimal fat burning, muscle building state. Where as when we?re stressed, exercise does not do anything to address the elephant sitting on our hormonal system, therefore results may be frustratingly, slow, limited, or hormonally impossible.

Our main stress hormone is cortisol. When overly stressed, cortisol levels rise above optimal levels which cause a few eyebrow raising effects on our fitness goals:

  • Atrophy of muscle tissue
  • Body fat storage
  • Elevated blood sugar
  • Proportional decrease in Growth Hormone

While the first three bullet points above carry some degree of self-explanation, the last one is perhaps worthy of slight expansion. For every mile cortisol elevates, growth hormone lowers by the same distance. As if the stress hormone consequences of muscle wasting, fat storing, and elevated blood sugar (which means even more fat storage) weren?t enough, now it?s amplified as our cortisol elevation causes suppression of our fitness friendly growth hormone levels. Growth hormone is responsible for:

  • Protein synthesis (muscle building)
  • Fat burning
  • Anti-aging

The most effective way to increase our growth hormone level is actually to decrease our cortisol levels. The most effective way to decrease our cortisol levels is to take a look at what we?re doing to stress ourselves, which is what gave the body a good reason to elevate cortisol levels in the first place. For legitimate, long term improvements, our mission isn?t to look at elevated cortisol as the cause of our fitness downfalls. Our direction would be to acknowledge that elevated cortisol is a symptom of the stress we have in our lives and then address the respective stress head on.

Addressing the Cause

How do you know if you?re stressed? There is a great chance that if you?ve ever been diagnosed with the condition called ?being a human? that you carry excessive stress.? Not to be overlooked is also the ease or grind with which your fitness goals come to you, as the more challenging the results are the more likely it is that you?re experiencing the symptoms of being stressed. What are the sources of your excessive stress?? At best to tickle your introspective observance, here is a brief list of some common ones:

  • Sleeping less than 8-hrs
  • Reactions to career pressure
  • Unmet expectations in relationships
  • Low self worth
  • Unresolved emotional wounding
  • Feeling purposeless
  • Eating toxic food
  • Note: If you?re having trouble identifying what actually stresses you out, it is likely that your stress is very real yet is also hidden. Working with a qualified coach or counselor is the recommended route for discovering and rebalancing hidden stress.

Once you?ve connected with what you believe to be your heaviest stressful baggage, specifically addressing it head on is ideal if you have the know how and inner resources to do so. The implication here is that the most effective stress reduction is individualized to your specific stress. Below are broad spectrum yet powerful methods of reducing stress:

  • Meditation
  • Journaling
  • Slow walking in nature
  • Keeping the television off
  • Mindful breathing
  • Blood sugar balance with clean food
  • Sleeping 8-hrs per night
  • Working with a coach or therapist

Conclusion

The stronger, leaner you is well supported by your efforts to address the softer side of life.? You?re invited to regularly remind yourself why it is you?re journaling, meditating, sleeping well, etc. These seemingly benign actions (or non-actions) have the ripple effect through your hormonal system that can untangle an otherwise impossible to produce fitness results web of imbalance. Overlooking your stress while anticipating your body to become sculptured can be like expecting a gold fish to win a fight against a wolverine, it can be a steep up hill improbable climb!? Inviting stress reduction to be an integral part of your health and fitness regimen supports you with the hormonal infrastructure to make it a much smoother glide to the results you dream of.

Paying for a Good Education in the Beginning or the End?

When I was in graduate school, I met a man who was Puerto Rican and spoke Spanish.?

His wife was Korean and spoke Korean.? When they had a daughter, they made the conscious decision to only speak English to her so that she wouldn?t be confused by the languages.

I still look at that situation and mourn the tremendous opportunity to learn three languages that this child missed.

Imagine the job opportunities for a trilingual speaker who speaks Spanish, Korean and English!

My husband is Japanese, and while I speak a bit of Japanese, I am by no means conversational.? (Just ask my husband?s mother; I still panic when she calls because I only know a few conversational phrases.)

We determined when we married that we wanted to raise our children to be bilingual; however, that is difficult when mom doesn?t speak the language and dad is at work 10 hours of the day.

Continues after Advertisement

We decided to pay tuition to send our children to a private Montessori Japanese language school.? We resolved to invest money in our children?s education upfront, fully aware that the money we spend now is money we won?t have available when they go to college.

Why Invest in Education Upfront?

  1. The skills learned at a young age will be easily learned again.? My son went to Japanese school for five years; he has a strong foundation in the language, and we are confident that if he spends part of his summer in Japan and studies Japanese in high school or college, he will be able to more easily pick up the language than if he had never studied it.
  2. Learning ?another language improves cognitive problem solving skills.? According to Therese Sullivan Caccavale, president of the National Network for Early Language Learning (NNELL), ?Foreign language learning is much more a cognitive problem solving activity than a linguistic activity, overall.? Studies have shown repeatedly that foreign language learning increases critical thinking skills, creativity, and flexibility of mind in young children.? Students who are learning a foreign language out-score their non-foreign language learning peers in the verbal, and surprisingly to some, the math sections of standardized tests? (ACTFL).
  3. The children will have a strong educational base.? Both my husband and I believe that if young children receive a strong educational base, they will be stronger students throughout their lifetimes.? If reading is enjoyable and easy, children are more likely to read frequently.? The more they read, the stronger they become as students, which helps them excel.? It is a positive cycle.

Of course, we are taking a gamble.

We hope that our children will get scholarships to college, but we know that scholarships are harder and harder to come by.? In eight years when our son is going to go to college, the projected costs for a four year, in state, public college education is $130,686.? There is no way we will be able to pay that, especially when most of the money we could put away for his college fund is being used now for his and his sisters? current education.

Still, my husband and I both love reading and learning and were good students who worked hard in school.? We want our children to also experience that joy.

Public School Education and Cash for College

invest in education early

What do you think of investing in a child?s education early?

Many people who understand our rationale for paying for an expensive language program for our children now don?t believe it is the best use of our money.

These people believe it is better to save money for college instead.? They argue that a free public school education will be good enough for their children or that it provides a strong enough foundation.

I do agree that a public school education can prepare a child for college.? I attended a public school in kindergarten and then for grades 7 through 12, and I was able to get admitted to, and graduate from, a Big Ten university.? One of my high school classmates was accepted to, and graduated from, Harvard.

However, the quality of public school education varies greatly based on where you live. ?

While I grew up in a fairly small town with a good education system, we currently live about a mile from a great school district.? Our school district, however, leaves much to be desired.? In addition, the schools are so large that I prefer my children attend a smaller, private school.? I am willing to pay more for the quality of education now with the intention that they will be stronger students overall than if they attended our mediocre school district.

In an ideal world, parents would be able to give their children both a primary and secondary education as well as a strong college education.? However, many people are unable or unwilling to pay for private primary education or to live in an expensive school district.? Others would like to help their children with their college education but must instead save for their own retirement.

Continues after Advertisement

Ultimately, the parents must decide what is best for their children.?

We have taken a gamble by investing in our children?s education at the youngest age, but we feel it is worthwhile.? They may choose to not study Japanese again, but if they do want to, they will have a strong foundation in the language.

Do you think it is worthwhile to pay for a quality education in primary and secondary school, or is it better to save for a college education?

How will the new music distribution model look?

How do today?s youth listen to music? Beyond Ipods now many young people download music via audio samples on the web. What is the status quo when it comes to music distribution? Is music distribution destined to crumble as people download music illegally? How to promote a band and sell music online when so many people are stealing music from the internet?

With this booming popularity comes the dilemma of whether to download music legally that can be downloaded through programs such as iTunes, or to "illegally" download it from P2P (peer-to-peer) music websites.

In an article on RedOrbit.com ?Are You a Pirate? Teens Debate the Ethics of Illegally Downloading Music? Steven Koll says he buys his new music from iTunes. "I choose to download music and pay for it so that the artists get some recognition for their work," he said. "Otherwise, good new bands may stop producing CDs." Koll estimates that he?s bought about 500 songs for his iPod. In the same article Abby Broughton, a Hidden Valley High School freshman, says that for her to download music legally is a nonissue.

"My parents pay for my new music because they would rather me not do it illegally," she said. "So it?s never been a choice for me." Yet Daniel Fundakowski, an IT tech at Hidden Valley, said he sees teens illegally download music all the time on laptops issued to students by Roanoke County Public Schools."Everyone likes new music," he said. "And why pay for it when you can get it for free?" (Then how are artists supposed to sell music online and make a living we ask?) What has happened to the music community ethos? While he understands the reasons why some teens illegally download music, he said anyone caught with illegal audio samples on his school-issued laptop faces consequences.

However, he said, the school system is not responsible for turning students in to the police. Many teens agree that they don?t think about the consequences when they illegally download music. Daniel Arsura, a Hidden Valley freshman, never thought he would get caught with illegal music. But one day, his mom got an email from his Internet provider. "They said that they didn?t appreciate when I download music," he said. "They threatened that if I didn?t delete the offending music websites, then they would shut down our Internet." It was enough, Daniel said, to learn his lesson. Now he pays for his new ?music on iTunes.

Others feel it?s worth the risk to download music illegally, saying that paying 99 cents for each song adds up. "I never really feel guilty when I download music without paying for it," said Drew Hudson, a Cave Spring freshman. "If the new bands were really in it for the music, they wouldn?t care whether we?re paying for their new music or not."Teens said one disadvantage to iTunes is its limited database of artists and songs. The illegal music websites, on the other hand, have a larger database and variety of material, because no one regulates what material goes on the site. In fact, artists are losing money from people who download music illegally. The Recording Industry Association of America estimates revenue from artists who sell music online. As a result, the RIAA has filed lawsuits against many everyday people, from teenagers to grandparents to professors, when they illegaly download music. "When you go online and download music," the RIAA?s Web site states, "you are stealing." Local solo artist Cliff Wright said when he was in high school, the download music craze had just begun. "CD burners were brand new," he said. "Napster was just becoming big, Morpheus soon followed it, and I definitely downloaded music." He said he stopped downloading ?music after realizing how much work it takes for new bands to make it in the industry.

For amateurs and new bands, the Internet can be your best friend or your enemy.Artists such as Colbie Caillat, Sarah Bareilles and One Republic became as popular as they are now through music websites. "I myself have lost probably around $3,000 in the past year from people who download music," Wright said. His advice: Check out your favorite new bands MySpace page instead of downloading. But many teenagers, and even some musicians, think otherwise about downloading. A survey done by USA Weekend Magazine showed that 54 percent of teenagers don?t think there?s anything wrong with illegally downloading music. Others said it cheats the artist, but they do it anyway.

DANVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden and Republican Rep. Paul Ryan seized the campaign spotlight Thursday night for a 90-minute debate, their only faceoff of the 2012 race for the White House.

The encounter between the 69-year-old vice president and 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman was a high-profile interlude between last week's race-altering debate featuring President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney and next Tuesday's return engagement.

Romney has gained ground in national and battleground-state surveys in the week since he shared a stage with the president, and even Obama has conceded he performed poorly.

Mocking recent changes in Romney's rhetoric, Obama told a Miami rally on Thursday, "After running for more than a year in which he called himself severely conservative, Mitt Romney is trying to convince you that he was severely kidding."

Romney visited with 93-year-old evangelist Billy Graham in North Carolina ? 'Prayer is the most helpful thing you can do for me," he told the evangelist ? before an evening rally in Asheville.

For Biden, Thursday night's debate was his first since the 2008 campaign, when he shared a stage with Sarah Palin, then John McCain's running mate.

Ryan spars frequently with Democrats during debates on legislation on the House floor and in the House Budget Committee, which he chairs, but not in a one-on-one encounter covering 90 minutes and a virtually unlimited range of topics.

For all their differences, the two men shared a common objective, to advance the cause of their tickets in a close race for the presidency ? and avoid a gaffe that might forever seal their place in the history of debates.

Romney's choice of Ryan as running mate over the summer cheered conservatives in the House, many of whom regard him as their leader on budget and economic issues. The seven-term lawmaker has authored a pair of deficit-reducing budgets in the past two years that call for spending cuts and changes in Medicare, blueprints that Republicans passed through the House and Obama and his allies in Congress frequently criticize. He also champions a no-tax increase approach to economic policy.

As a senator before becoming vice president, Biden was chairman of the Foreign Relations and Judiciary committees, and he has long experience in national security issues. More recently, he was Obama's point man in arduous, ultimately unsuccessful negotiations with Republicans on steps to cut the deficit.

Both Ryan and Biden held extensive rehearsals, with stand-ins for their opponents.

Biden turned to Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., who is well-versed in Ryan's policy views from his tenure as senior Democrat on the Budget Committee.

Ryan's foil in rehearsal was former Solicitor General Ted Olson, a skillful courtroom advocate.

Martha Raddatz of ABC News had moderator duties.

After they meet next week in Hempstead, N.Y., Obama and Romney will have one more debate, Oct. 22 in Boca Raton, Fla.

UK energy minister wants to fund two CCS projects

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's energy minister wants to financially support two pilot carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, a technology the UK is banking on to reduce climate-warming emissions and to develop as a new export product.

Britain sees CCS as a key technology for reducing carbon emissions in the energy sector, and the government has launched a 1 billion pound competition to fund one or more projects.

Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Edward Davey, will next week meet the heads of the UK's coalition government to make a case for awarding government funds to two CCS projects, an official source familiar with the plans told Reuters.

Up until now it has not being clear whether the competition would fund one or more projects.

"(Davey) is calling for support for at least two full chain projects," the government source said.

Britain's previous attempts to finance CCS projects failed as costs surged above expectations, but the UK is counting on the technology to help it meet legally-binding climate targets and is banking on using it as a new export product to countries which have a vast fleet of polluting coal plants, such as China.

The winner or winners of the competition will be announced soon, a spokesman for the energy ministry said.

Britain's plan to fund CCS projects runs alongside a European Union programme, which has earmarked two UK CCS projects as contenders to win up to 337 million euros (271 million pounds) of funding each raised from the sale of carbon permits in the EU.

EU countries whose projects were short-listed for the funding have to tell the Commission by the end of the month which three projects, including any renewable energy schemes, they would be able to support beyond the EU money to ensure they get built.

"We stand a very, very good chance to get at least one project," the source said.

The energy ministry spokesman said it would respond to the Commission by the deadline and that the UK's CCS competition would be aligned with the timetable of the EU-wide programme.

He declined to comment on whether Davey was meeting the prime minister next week.

Britain's Electricity Market Reform proposals, which are currently being assessed by parliament, include a mechanism to guarantee a minimum price of electricity for generators which emit no carbon, including CCS plants.

These so-called contracts for difference make UK an attractive place to invest in CCS projects as they are guaranteed set long-term revenue.

(AP) ? Liver trouble killed a giant panda cub that died suddenly last month less, than a week after its surprise birth at the National Zoo, the institute's chief veterinarian said Thursday.

Suzan Murray said the cub's cause of death was liver necrosis, or the death of liver cells. Murray said at a news conference the cub's lungs were also underdeveloped and likely didn't provide enough oxygen to the liver.

The cub's underdeveloped lungs may have been caused by being born prematurely, Murray said. Zoo scientists are trying to learn more about how common the liver and lung defects are in newborn pandas that don't survive.

The cub, a female, was born Sept. 16.

Zoo officials and panda fans were devastated by its death less than a week later. The birth was a surprise because it hadn't been clear whether Mei Xiang was still fertile.

Don Moore, the zoo's associate director for animal sciences, said panda mother Mei Xiang has been showing less mothering behavior and has stopped cradling a toy in recent days.

In addition, after spending nearly four weeks in her den, she has stopped staying inside and is sleeping out in the panda yard. As a result, zoo keepers on Wednesday cleared out the nest she had built.

The zoo has a five-year agreement with China to keep its two pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tain, through 2015. Murray will travel to China this month as the zoo begins planning for the future. They will discuss whether to keep both pandas in Washington or to swap one or both out for the next breeding season.

A decision should be made in November, Moore said.

Whole Foods Chicken Salad 300x200 Raleigh?s Best Creamy Chicken Salads

There?s just something about creamy chicken salad that makes it one of my favorite sandwich fillings. I like mine mixed with fresh chicken (preferably white meat) celery, onion, lite mayo, salt and pepper ? that?s about it, although every now and then sliced grapes and sweet pickles can slide into the mix. I?m not too picky about the bread it?s served on (rolls, sourdough, rye, wraps, etc.) as long as it?s good and fresh. Or I can eat it right out of the container, plain.

Several months ago I posted my favorite Chunky Chicken Salads in Raleigh, with the promise to follow up with the best creamy chicken salads in the area. I could research this topic forever (and probably will) so I finally decided to get on with it and publish my favorites so far.

?

 Raleigh?s Best Creamy Chicken Salads

Poppyseed Market (8801 Leadmine Rd., Raleigh, N.C. 27615). If you?ve never been to Poppyseed, I totally recommend it ? either for takeout or dine-in. Chef/owner Julia McGovern offers a number of specialty sandwiches, salads, entrees, desserts, wines, etc. in this gourmet deli/caf?/wine bar. You may know Julia when she was chosen as sous chef to Angus Barn?s executive chef, Walter Royal, on the Food Network?s ?Iron Chef America? program in 2006 (they won!) But I digress ? on to the chicken salad, which is awesome. Roasted chicken is mixed with onions, celery, light mayo and Dijon mustard and served on a flaky croissant for $8.75, which includes homemade potato chips (yum!) and a pickle. There are so many great offerings at Poppyseed, and this one is definitely one of my favorites (along side Chef McGovern?s pimento cheese, which is an upcoming post, for sure.)

 Raleigh?s Best Creamy Chicken Salads

Cameron Bar and Grill (2018 Clark Avenue Raleigh, N.C., 27605) I love Cameron Bar and Grill?s mimosas and I love its chicken salad. It is fresh and creamy, and has sliced red grapes, which gives it a sweet taste. Order it on sourdough bread for $7.00, and it comes with your choice of fries, hot chips, fruit salad, slaw, garden salad, etc. CBG is one of my favorite restaurants in Raleigh?s Cameron Village, whether for lunch, dinner or late afternoon drinks after a hard day of shopping.

 Raleigh?s Best Creamy Chicken Salads

Justin?s Grill (1322A Millbrook Rd., Raleigh, N.C.? 27609). Located in the Quail Corner?s Shopping Center, Justin?s serves Mediterranean and American deli food. The staff is extremely friendly. The menu describes its chicken salad as ?our grandma?s tasty recipe with tender chicken.? Yes, the chicken is quite tender and its flavor comes through because there is little mayo and tiny bits of celery. This chicken salad is more of a spread, and they put a good sized scoop of it on your choice of bread. Chips are included, all for $5.25. Great price, great sandwich!

 Raleigh?s Best Creamy Chicken Salads

Snoopy?s (various Raleigh locations). Yes, the hot dog place. The one that is just as busy late night as it is at lunch has great homemade chicken salad. I had no idea until my friend Pam told me about it, and I?m so glad she did ? this stuff is delicious! It?s on the sweet side and has eggs, pickles, celery and mayo. I got the Homemade Chicken Salad Club ($5.99) that came with two cheeses, bacon, lettuce and tomato. Fries/chips are extra. Great stuff!

 Raleigh?s Best Creamy Chicken Salads

Pharaoh?s Grill (4421 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh, N.C. 27609). This chicken salad is creamy, fresh and made from all white meat chicken, with pickles and mayo. A chicken salad sandwich on your choice of bread is $6.49 and chips/fries, etc. are extra. The North Hills location is tiny and usually crowded at lunch, so go early or late. There is also a location in Raleigh?s Museum of History, with the same menu. You can purchase the chicken salad by the half-pound or pound as well.

 Raleigh?s Best Creamy Chicken Salads

There are two store-made chicken salads that I buy most often when I don?t make my own, and they are Fresh Market?s Rotisserie Chicken Salad ($8.49/lb.) and Whole Foods? Classic Chicken Salad ($9.99/lb.) Both are pricey, but they are fantastic with fresh chicken mixed with mayo, celery, onions, etc., and you can most certainly pass them off as homemade (just saying.) However, if you do want to make your own, try Kel?s Creamy Chicken Salad, which I posted earlier this year. The recipe can be found at: http://kelleychisholm.com/2012/04/15/kels-homemade-creamy-chicken-salad/

 Raleigh?s Best Creamy Chicken Salads

So there you have it, my favorite creamy chicken salads in Raleigh. If I left one of yours off my list, please let me know ? this is one food I never get tired of trying!

Bon app?tit!

Eat, drink and be merry!

McGill Tribune ? McGill hosts inaugural Mental Health Awareness ...

This past week, McGill hosted its first Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW), which consisted of a series of panels and workshops with the purpose of increasing awareness for mental health issues on campus.

According to Access Services Advisor Gordon Dionne, the idea for MHAW originated when McGill?s Ombudsperson, Dr. Spencer Boudreau, proposed it to Senate, as many students were coming to see him about mental health issues. Eventually, the idea reached Student Services, where Dionne picked it up as a project on behalf of McGill Mental Health Services.

?It?s still spearheaded by Mental Health, but it?s really become a cross-divisional project,? Dionne said. ?Most of Student Services [have been] involved at all levels throughout the whole week [and] everybody on campus has been invited to come to all the events.?

Mental Health Services conceived of MHAW as a result of Canadian universities? growing realization of the importance of mental health issues on campus, and was tied into last week?s National Mental Illness Awareness Week.

MHAW?s panels included a lecture by Lina Di Genova, manager of student assessment at Student Services, and Vera Romano, clinical director of Counselling Service, entitled, ?Spotlight on Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-Being at McGill.? Di Genova and Romano presented the findings of a McGill survey that was based on Pennsylvania State University?s mental health and counselling benchmark study.

Approximately 2,500 McGill students took part in this anonymous, web-based survey that encompassed eight categories of mental health issues: depression, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, academic distress, eating concerns, family distress, substance and alcohol abuse, and hostility.

The survey?s results were analyzed in relation to demographic intersectionalities. For example, of the 50 per cent of the student sample who reported dealing with depression on a recurring basis, there were higher proportions of women and students who were experiencing financial difficulties.

Di Genova and Romano?s lecture also hypothesized reasons for the increase of mental health issues on campus, including biological factors, family-related stressors, as well as ?Generation Me??a phenomenon which indicates that young adults feel a high need to be exceptional due to societal pressures, but struggle with doing so in a period of global economic crisis.

According to Romano, Student Services can improve their assistance to students dealing with mental health issues by focusing on resiliency and wellness, instead of using negative language to approach such issues.

?Mental health is not the absence of disease or distress, but the promotion of holistic wellness,? Romano said.

The panel ended with an overview of the various organizations that promote wellness at McGill, including Fitness McGill, Counselling Services, and the Health Promotion Team.

?We want to really help engage students and empower them to take ownership of their own wellness,? Di Genova said. ?[They should] feel as though they?re a part of the [McGill] community.?

MHAW also offered free yoga sessions to students throughout the week. Yoga instructor Annie Shiel led a ?Yoga for Stress? session this past Friday.

?It?s not an exercise class,? Shiel explained. ?It?s really focused on what yoga does for your mind. We try to help people let go of everything else for 60 minutes, and give people tools that they can use off of the mat as well.?

Yoga for Stress is normally put on by Fit @ McGill and the Eating Disorder Program.

Overall, Dionne expressed satisfaction with how the inaugural MHAW has been received by the McGill community.

?I [saw] more and more people coming to the events [as the week progressed], and wearing the orange buttons that were made as a part of the campaign,? Dionne said. ?It?s exciting to see that people are actively supporting the idea of having a ?well campus.? ?

Hospital bedsores linked to patient mortality

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? A new clinical study spearheaded by the dean of UCLA's School of Nursing has found a direct correlation between pressure ulcers -- commonly known as bedsores -- and patient mortality and increased hospitalization.

The research is believed to be the first of its kind to use data directly from medical records to assess the impact of hospital-acquired pressure ulcers on Medicare patients at national and state levels.

According to the study, featured as the lead article in the current issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, seniors who developed pressure ulcers were more likely to die during their hospital stay, to have longer stays in the hospital, and to be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of their discharge.

To arrive at their findings, the researchers tracked more than 51,000 randomly selected Medicare beneficiaries hospitalized across the United States in 2006 and 2007.

"Hospital-acquired pressure ulcers were shown to be an important risk factor associated with mortality," said Dr. Courtney Lyder, lead investigator on the study and dean of the UCLA School of Nursing. "It is incumbent upon hospitals to identify individuals at high risk for these ulcers and implement preventive interventions immediately upon admission."

According to Lyder and his research team, individuals at the highest risk are those with existing chronic conditions, such as congestive heart failure, pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity, as well as those on steroids.

In conducting the study, the researchers were challenged by the fact that there is no large single database to help determine the incidence of pressure ulcers among hospitalized Medicare patients. They therefore culled their data from Medicare's claim history, a national surveillance system designed to identify adverse events -- or "unintended harm" -- within the hospitalized Medicare population. The researchers looked at this data to determine the cause and patterns of hospital-acquired pressure ulcers.

The study found that 4.5 percent of the patients tracked acquired a pressure ulcer during their stay in the hospital. The majority of these bedsores were found on the tailbone or sacrum, followed by the hip, buttocks and heels. The study also revealed that of the nearly 3,000 individuals who entered the hospital with a pressure ulcer, 16.7 percent developed at least one new bedsore on a different part of their body during their hospitalization.

"This is a serious issue, and now we have data that can help the health care system address this ongoing problem," Lyder said. "When individuals enter the hospital with the risk conditions that we've identified, it should send up an immediate warning signal that appropriate steps should be taken to minimize the chance of pressure ulcers occurring."

In addition to Lyder, clinical researchers on this study included Yun Wang of Qualidigm, the Centers for Outcomes Research and Evaluation at Yale University, and Yale-New Haven Health; Mark Metersky of Qualidigm and the division of pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine; Maureen Curry of Qualidigm; Rebecca Kliman of the Office of Clinical Standards and Quality at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services; Nancy Verzier of Qualidigm; and David Hunt of the Office of Health Information Technology Adoption in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.

The study was funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Data Recovery Services Announces Strategic ... - Computer Hardware

Dallas,TX (PRWEB) September 27, 2012

Data Recovery Services, a subdivision of the ACE Data Group, LLC, announced today that they have entered into a strategic partnership with Dell. The partnership allows all Dell support agents to recommend Data Recovery Services for any media recovery needs their customers may have. This expands the range of services Dell can offer their customers and greatly increases the level of customer satisfaction.

While most hardware manufacturers warranties only cover replacement of failed hardware and not data recovery, Dell is now well positioned to offer a comprehensive data recovery service for all of its commercial products. As the authority in the recovery industry, Data Recovery Services has provided reliable and cost effective solutions serving a global market for over 30 years. DRS facilities are cutting edge and staffed with the finest personnel from engineering to customer service. Data Recovery Services represents the best choice for Dell customers.

Even the best equipment on the planet, such as Dell, can fail or become inaccessible due to natural disasters, power surges, failed hard drives and human error. says Data Recovery Services General Manager Don Wells. This is where the DRS-Dell partnership comes into play to support Dells customers to the fullest.

Laptops and notebook computers take a lot of abuse, and with todays mobile technology, more and more critical data is being stored on these devices every day. Because they are often carried about and exposed to different environmental factors such as heat, water and dust, laptops and notebook computers are far more susceptible to data loss and became a subject for data recovery than their desktop counterparts.

Our RAID data recovery technologies are unparalleled in the industry- continued Mr. Wells- and we have dedicated resources to support exactly what Dell customers would require. With the quality of Dell products and our experience and knowledge, this partnership has made a right, full circle of support.

More and more corporations, and even small businesses, go to the cloud and virtual environments with comprehensive replication and backup. But no RAID or cloud setup is immune to data loss, and even the best configured systems can still fail due to power surges or human error. Replication, for example, does not protect against accidental deletion of critical data because this operation will be replicated. Unfortunately, backup infrastructure and plotting is not failure-proof itself and can be affected by data loss in the same ways current storage systems can. Also, many backups are not done on the glide, meaning a part of the vital data may not have been backed-up in the time window when the data loss happened. This piece of information may be critical for business itself, not to mention possible compliance and regulatory issues of sensitive data.

ACE Data Group CEO, Charles Walker, regards the Dell partnership as a major goal for the future direction of the company, This partnership is critical to our objective of being the number one data recovery and computer forensic service provider. We truly appreciate Dells confidence in our ability to not only solve complex recovery issues, but to also increase customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Texas quake rattles nerves but causes no injuries, damage

MEDINAH, Illinois (Reuters) - Medinah Country Club was bathed in sunshine for the second day of the Ryder Cup on Saturday and for the cheering galleries who lined the fairways and the U.S. players, it was a perfect autumn day in America's Midwest. Not so for the Europeans, especially Graeme McDowell, who two years ago was the hero of his team's win in Wales. On Saturday, he trudged off the 18th hole after losing his foursomes match with Brandt Snedeker and Jim Furyk just 24 hours after he and his partner Rory McIlroy had beaten the same American pairing. ...
