How America Gives: Charitable donations by state | MNN - Mother ...

Do you regularly donate to charity? Do you think others in your state donate regularly? Now you can learn more about charitable giving in all 50 states and thanks to The Chronicle of Philanthropy?s ?How America Gives? interactive map.

?

I live in Arizona and I regularly donate to charity ? both cash and item donations. According to the map, Arizona is ranked 20 out of 51 with $2.4 billion in total contributions. The median contribution was $2,436 with a median discretionary income of $52,924 and Arizona residents gave an average of 4.6 percent of their income to charity. This is slightly less than the national average of 4.7 percent of discretionary income.

?

Although these results look mediocre, The Chronicle of Philanthropy featured a nod to the Phoenix, Arizona area on its How America Gives page, noting that the city jumped 17 places in generosity rankings. Way to go fellow Phoenicians!

?

Highlights from the study include:

?

  • California residents are responsible for nearly $1 in $8 of charitable contributions.
  • Residents of Tulsa, Oklahoma?s 74103 zip code donated an average of 21.6 percent of their discretionary income.
  • Utah has the highest state average with 10.6 percent of their discretionary income going to charity.
  • New Hampshire has the lowest with a donation average of only 2.5 percent of discretionary income.
  • Zip code 10021, located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, is responsible for the largest donation total per zip code - $478 million.

?

The Chronicle of Philanthropy gathered IRS charitable donation data from 2008 to create the profile of giving across the country. Although a subscription to the site is required to view the entire content set, a significant portion of the data is available for free. Simply visit the How America Gives page to research giving in your state.
